Music for the Mind & Soul – FESTIVAL DAY

Much loved concert series ‘Music for the Mind & Soul’ returns to Liverpool in a brand new format! Inspired by Milap’s 35 year history, the new festival day will offer both loyal and new audiences a fresh and holistic experience of Indian Arts and Culture through a newly conceptualised day of performance, talks, workshops, yoga and Indian food.

The day will start with an early morning yoga session with a beautiful live Sitar accompaniment, followed by an Indian Classical Morning Raga Performance. There will be two headline musical shows – afternoon and evening – featuring some of the biggest names alongside the very best rising
talent in Indian Arts.

A special late-morning children’s performance will offer the perfect way to introduce the younger members of your family to Indian classical music, plus talks and workshops will introduce enthusiasts to Hindustani music and Indian vocal techniques.

Authentic Indian Food will be available throughout the day!

These ‘festivals-in-a-day’ have been designed to cater to all age groups and interests – you don’t need to know or understand Indian music – it just needs to be experienced! People can stay for the
entire day, or just drop in for specific events.

Start your weekend with a good stretch! Yoga master PR Mohanan will guide you through a 50 minute authentic yoga session aimed at opening your body up and getting into a good flow.  Great for beginners and more experienced yogi’s alike!  This yoga class will be extra special as it will be accompanied by beautiful, meditative live sitar music played by Akash Parekar.

Morning Raga
Keep the calm vibes going well into the morning with a blissful mini-concert featuring the classic combo of Sitar and tabla.  Performed by Akash Parekar and Hiren Chate.

Family Friendly Performance
A wonderful way to get the little ones involved in arts and culture.  More details to be announced soon!

Lunch ‘n Learn – Tabla Talks
Learn all about how Indian rhythm patterns are formed and how it’s performed on the tabla in particular in this fascinating discussion with one of the UK’s most prolific Tabla artists and Liverpool’s own, Kousic Sen.

Performance 1 – Debsagar Malik and Hiren Chate
Immerse yourself in the beautiful sounds of the Santoor and tabla in this quintessential Indian classical music concert.  Debsagar Malik is a rising star in India and visits Liverpool for the very first time along with Hiren Chate, an established and highly talented tabla player.  This performance will be followed by an informal post-concert chat with the aritsts.

Appreciating Hindustani Music
Learn the basics about Hindustani classical music and tips on how to make the most of and appreciate your Indian music concert going experience!

Performance 2 – Shakir Khan and Kousic Sen
Sitar and tabla come together in a performance that infuses the depth and intricacy of Indian classical tradition with youthful energy and musical innovation.
Acclaimed as one of the most sensitive and dynamic classical sitar players of his generation, Shakir Khan represents the legacy of his prodigious father and Guru – Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan.
Following in his father’s musical footsteps, he also stands out for his flawless instrumental technique, astonishing skills and sophisticated sense of rhythm and melodic presentation.
In this concert, he is accompanied by one of the finest and most versatile tabla maestros in the UK and Milap’s Artist in Residence, Kousic Sen, to create an electrifying and inspiring experience. This performance will be followed by an informal post-concert chat with the artists.
